Nestled in the rolling hills of Northwest Illinois, Freeport is a community offering a wide assortment of resources and amenities, ranging from history to art to entertainment. The area offers wonderful hotels, motels, bed and breakfast and campgrounds, as well as a full selection of restaurants from supper clubs to fast food. All of this, so close to Liberty Village that our residents take full advantage of the activities and services our community provides.

A nationally recognized hospital, a Grammy Award winning music program, the country’s oldest continuously running amateur theatre, a new state-of-the-art library, the historic Masonic Temple auditorium, the Freeport Art Museum, the Ferguson Fine Arts Center, nationally ranked Highland Community College Men’s basketball program and our most recent addition, Little Cubs Field – all a part of vibrant Freeport.

The parks and recreation facilities in Freeport are numerous and popular. Freeport offers one of the most beautiful city parks in the country, Krape Park. This park offers an old-fashioned carousel (for both children and adults!), a waterfall, duck pond, nature trail, miniature golf, paddleboat and canoe rentals, Frisbee disc golf, playground areas, a performance amphitheater (with regular concerts in the summer), gardens, wonderful picnic areas and so much more.  Other parks include Read Park with  the aquatic center and a skate park; Little Cubs Field, a replica of Wrigley Field that is used for Little League, T-ball, wiffle ball leagues and tournaments; Oakdale Nature Preserve with its oak and hickory woods, restored prairie area, streams, winding trails and the Gelwick’s Nature center.

Golf is a popular local activity. Freeport has Park Hills Golf Course offering two 18-hole public courses, plus several other public and private courses in the area. Other recreational facilities include a YMCA, fitness centers, bowling alley, stock car racing track, an observatory, a recreational trail, a conservation and hunting club and many others.

For arts, history and entertainment, Freeport offers the Winneshiek Playhouse, the oldest continuously running amateur theatre company in the country, offering live theatre each season. Highland Community College has the Ferguson Fine Arts Center which features a variety of fine arts programming including vocal and music concerts, live theater and special performances. The Freeport Art Museum, Stephenson County Historical Museum, Lincoln-Douglas Debate Square, Jane Addams home and burial site keep us connected to the past, yet the new Freeport Public Library provides the bridge to the future. First run movies are available at the newly refurbished nine-screen Lindo Theatre featuring stadium style seating.

Freeport is home to a plethora of clubs and service organizations. The community strives to be friendly and welcoming and this is shown by groups and organizations such as Kiwanis, Rotary, Lions, Jaycee’s, Knights of Columbus, Eagles, and Elks among them. The All Veterans Memorial Park honors those from our community that have served our county.

Local shopping outlets include the new Southgate Plaza featuring Wal-Mart and Menard’s; Meadows Shopping Center featuring JC Penny, K-Mart and Sears; Shopko, Farm & Fleet and downtown Freeport with a wide variety of locally owned unique shops. Grocery stores including Cub Foods, Sullivan’s Foods and Aldi’s are just a short bus ride away.
